It’s not unusual for someone to be afraid to visit the dentist. Some people have had really bad childhood experiences that have affected them ever since. There are people who get so anxious about their check-up that they have to take medication before their visit. Where do these fears come from and what can be done about them?

Anytime there is a bad experience, it can take some time to sort out your feelings. First, try to think about what caused you to be scared in the first place. Think back to the first time you remember having negative feelings about your teeth. If you can’t remember, ask your parents if they know what triggered your fears in the first place.

Next, find out exactly what you are afraid of. Is it the doctor, location, room, building, or the cleaning instruments? If you can figure out what it is that makes you so anxious, you can start to get to the root of the problem. It’s not uncommon for people with these deep rooted fears to be scared to even drive by a dental office. These fears can go way back to childhood, which can make them difficult to sort out. They should not complete any dental procedure without first checking to make sure that the patient is not experiencing pain or anxiety. A patient doctor will show true concern and care for the individual sitting in his chair.

There are special dental offices that cater to patient’s that have an extreme fear for dental procedures. You can find offices that have water-falls and fire places. They also have colorful pictures on the wall instead of threatening dental pictures about gum disease and other dental problems. Sometimes, this change of scenery has been enough to help put a frightened patient at ease.

Being afraid to go to the dentist can be a normal feeling. But, if you start to avoid appointments or notice that you are too scared to go for a check-up, it might be time to seek professional help.
